Hollinswood Ranch is an important part of the community, and intends to continue giving back and being a good neighbor. For example, the ranch provided 200,000 tons of boulders to create 10 five-acre artificial reefs for a federal mitigation project in the Gulf of Mexico.  In addition, much of the fill material is used for state and federal forests for road maintenance and construction.

The Hollins family cares a great deal about the sustainability of the mining operations. Everyone wants to ensure that good jobs stay within the community, while also making sure that natural resources are protected. Whether or not the Area Plan is approved, mining operations will continue into the future for some 20 to 30 years. Dixie Hollins is committed to returning the land to a productive state as early as possible. In fact, reclamation—replanting and restoration of habitat—will occur every five years. In most mining operations, mining is complete before reclamation begins.

The current mining operations are managed by CEMEX, which employs about 55 people and has an annual payroll of $2.3 million and expenses in excess of $6 million.

CEMEX provided the raw materials for 1500 homes in Citrus County. With the average cost of $200,000, that’s a substantial impact for local builders and home development trades.

CEMEX provides a re-investment in the community of between $900,000 and $1.5 million annually, sells 200,000 tons of aggregate rock a year in local markets, and provides an annual economic impact of $636 million.

CEMEX supplies aggregate material to 44 ready-mix plants across the region and state. Much of the aggregate material from the mine stays right in Citrus and Levy Counties, but also goes as far north as Gainesville, as far east as Daytona Beach, and south to Lakeland.
